Our Malawi Tree Programme Begins

We are very proud to share our first update from our new tree planting partnership in Malawi with the charity Mbedza.

This programme is led by the Village Development Committees who take responsibility for each project within their communities. In the photo you can see one of these committees together with Mbedza’s Environment Officer, Richard Malili, back row and second from the right.

Here is how the programme works. Seeds are planted in the nurseries in July, and saplings are planted out before the end of January. These are the only fixed points in the calendar. Our monthly support helps keep everything moving in between. It covers nursery care, land preparation, community training and monitoring, and each month the total builds in readiness for the next planting season.

This work matters. Trees restore damaged land, protect water sources, improve soil quality and bring long term environmental stability for the villages. They also reduce pressure on forests, which supports wildlife and strengthens the livelihoods of families who depend on the land.

Richard is an experienced environmental specialist who guides the communities with nursery management, woodlot development, soil assessment and pest control. He also works closely with village chiefs to choose the best planting sites for long term growth.

We are beginning by funding five new trees every month, and it is a privilege to support this vital environmental and community work.

Mbedza also helps families through fuel efficient stoves, education programmes and community health initiatives, so our contribution supports a much wider positive impact across the region.

More updates will follow as our trees progress through their early stages of growth.
